CAUSES:
In 1862, the Union was getting crushed by the Confederates in the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederates advanced into Maryland, believing he could find supplies. Unfortunately for him, General George B. McClellan of the Union intercepted a copy of Lee’s plan and moved to go find him. By the time McClellan arrived in Sharpsburg, Maryland, Lee only had one escape route. Then, the Battle of Antietam began.
